Summer’s just around the corner, and our minds are turning to frosty beers and warm afternoons.

Manhattan may be known for posh rooftop bars, but we’re thinking about the thick mugs and great eats of your local biergartens. So split a giant pretzel with us while we list the 5 Best NYC Beer Gardens.

Bohemian Hall - NYC Beer Gardens

Bohemian Hall

29-19 24th Ave. – Astoria, Queens

The oldest Beer Garden in NYC is still the best. Appearing like a stone castle over the streets of Queens, Bohemian Hall has a selection of German and Czech brews. An array of affordable sausage platters are also available in this football sized space. The perfect local place to waste away an afternoon with friends at one of the wooden picnic tables.

Harlem Tavern - NYC Beer Gardens

Harlem Tavern

301 W 116th St – Harlem, Manhattan

Our first Manhattan entry on the list is also our newest. Harlem Tavern features that Manhattan rarity- open outdoor space. Mingle with locals and college students as you sample the wide selection of beers and cocktails. Don’t skip out on the bar snacks, running the gambit from fries to shrimp ceviche.

The Standard Biergarten

848 Washington Street- Meatpacking District, Manhattan

Standing right below Manhattan’s famous Standard Hotel, the Standard Biergarten is the perfect place to spend a beautiful, spring afternoon before or after a leisurely walk along the High Line. Indulge in traditional German fare such as pretzels and sausages, and maybe even join in on a free game of Ping-Pong. In the summer months, the biergarten is decked out with their specially made tables. Known as Stammtisch, each table allows you to pour your own beer from three different taps built right into the table itself!

Berry Park - NYC Beer Gardens

Berry Park

4 Berry Street – Greenpoint, Brooklyn

This mammoth beer garden in North Brooklyn is a legendary location for viewing the July 4th fireworks, but its appeal lasts year-long. With one of the best roof decks in Brooklyn and a selection drawing from around the world, Berry Park offers everything one could want on a long summer afternoon. Get there early on the weekends to secure a rooftop table for your party. Beware the Huckleberry Lemonade, delicious but dangerous!

Inwood Local - NYC Beer Gardens

Inwood Local

4957 Broadway – Inwood, Manhattan

While this northern retreat may be a popular place for locales, don’t let that dissuade you from paying a visit. Featuring one of the best beer lists north of Harlem, Inwood Local is worth the trip up the A. The front bar with rotating live music is excellent in the winter months, but it’s the tented back yard where this local gem really shines. Enjoy the regional brew and pleasant conversation, and wonder why you don’t get up here more often.
