It wasn\u2019t until the late 19th century that the village was absorbed into the rest of the Catalan capital with the construction of the Eixample district, which was built to connect the old and new parts of the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located at the top of Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia, the barrio still feels like its own village compared to the busier Gothic Quarter<\/a> and El Born district. Though close to Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia<\/a>, Gr\u00e0cia is off the beaten tourist path. It doesn\u2019t cater to visitors, which helps it retain its neighborhood feel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Gr\u00e0cia is also a trendsetter in Barcelona, known for making new cuisines and festivals popular throughout the city. The neighborhood\u2019s a favorite with artists and a more bohemian crowd, yet it also counts a large elderly population among its residents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike Las Ramblas<\/a>, which is always crowded with visitors, you\u2019ll get an idea of what it\u2019s like to live in the neighborhood. And while you should still keep a tight hold on your belongings, you don\u2019t need to worry as much about pickpockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gr\u00e0cia has five main metro stations \u2014 Fontana, Diagonal, Verdaguer, Joanic, and Lesseps \u2014 that are easy to get to via the L3 (Green) and L4 (Yellow) lines from the city center. If you prefer the bus, take the H6, V17, and V15 routes. Walking is also a nice way to get to Gr\u00e0cia, using main avenues like Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia (what Pla\u00e7a Catalunya turns into) and Travessera de Gr\u00e0cia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it’s in Gr\u00e0cia, you\u2019ll find Gaud\u00ed\u2019s first commissioned work, Casa Vicens, which paved the way for all his later masterpieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or Gran de Gr\u00e0cia, a major shopping street that\u2019s always busy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More shopping streets<\/strong>: Almost every street in Gr\u00e0cia is a shopping street, but be sure to check out Carrer Verdi and Carrer Torrijos.
