The exact origins of the <\/em>caganer are uncertain, but it is believed to have existed in Catalonia since the 18th century. Some experts think that the figure may even have originated from ancient fertility rituals, while others suggest that it was the people\u2019s way of rebelling against the church’s strict rules and authority in what was then turning to be a more secular population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Many souvenir shops sell small figurines that you can take home with you. At Christmas time, in particular, you will find the Mercat de Nadal in the Pla\u00e7a Nova overflowing with stalls of all sorts of crazy characters and creatures which have been caganer-ified!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re feeling crafty, you can try your hand at painting your own caganer figure. Either by joining a workshop or purchasing a do-it-yourself kit. I’ve done this, and it’s fun. I painted mine like a leprechaun in hopes of doubling down on that old lucky charm factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fun fact: <\/strong>There’s more than one Catalan Christmas tradition with a scatalogical twist. Catalan children don’t get gifts from Santa Claus. They get them from Caga Ti\u00f3, aka Ti\u00f3 de Nadal, a yule log unlike any other. It’s a log with a face on the end that you keep in your home for the holidays. Then on Christmas, it poops small presents and sweets. Yes, really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
