It is considered a sort of good luck charm and is thought to bring prosperity, fertility, and good fortune to the household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History of the caganer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The exact origins of the<em> <\/em>caganer are uncertain, but it is believed to have existed in Catalonia since the 18th century. Some experts think that the figure may even have originated from ancient fertility rituals, while others suggest that it was the people\u2019s way of rebelling against the church&#8217;s strict rules and authority in what was then turning to be a more secular population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The caganer is often seen as an equalizer of sorts against greater powers because he is a reminder of the humanity within us all. No matter who we are or where we come from, we all poop!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact today, you can find a whole host of varied interpretations of this figurine, including celebrity and political figures, animals, and fictional characters. Today, <em>el caganer <\/em>is an integral part of Catalan Christmas celebrations and is a symbol of the region&#8217;s unique culture and identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to experience the caganer tradition today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the next time you\u2019re in town, you\u2019re interested in experiencing the caganer tradition, there are several ways to go about it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many souvenir shops sell small figurines that you can take home with you. At Christmas time, in particular, you will find the Mercat de Nadal in the Pla\u00e7a Nova overflowing with stalls of all sorts of crazy characters and creatures which have been caganer-ified!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re feeling crafty, you can try your hand at painting your own caganer figure. Either by joining a workshop or purchasing a do-it-yourself kit. I&#8217;ve done this, and it&#8217;s fun.
