The history of Paris\u2019 Galeries Lafayette<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t your average Paris department store. Today, it\u2019s an institution in the City of Light spread across three buildings. But it began as a small haberdashery store (where small novelty items are sold) when it was opened by two cousins from Alsace, Th\u00e9ophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn, in 1893. Their dream was to create what they called a \u201cluxury bazaar,\u201d and in October 1912, this new shopping experience was unveiled to the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, Galeries Lafayette has gone global with new stores set to open soon. You can find their international stores primarily in Asia and the Middle East, but it all started in Paris on the Boulevard Haussmann. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should you visit the Galeries Lafayette in Paris?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In a word, yes! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

People don\u2019t just visit Galeries Lafayette to shop. Like the Eiffel Tower<\/a>, Notre-Dame<\/a>, and the Louvre<\/a>, it\u2019s a tourist destination in its own right with over 2,000 brands, including restaurants, bars, and cafes \u2014 there\u2019s no need to go anywhere else! Each of its three buildings offers a different experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to see inside the shopping mall<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once you walk into Lafayette Coupole, it\u2019s very clear that you\u2019ve stepped into a different type of shopping mall. Security guards wearing sharp suits welcome you, and everyone who works there seems to be well dressed. Yes, everything is fashionable! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll also notice that there are no \u201cstores\u201d in the traditional sense. Instead, the Galeries borrow a bazaar layout, with individual open spaces claimed by different brands \u2014 it feels like an indoor farmers\u2019 market but for fancy luxury brands. Guess bags hang on display, Swarovski crystals glitter under glass cases, Dior perfume bottles are artfully arranged, and the can\u2019t-miss neon-red Gucci sign casts a radiant glow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you start making your way up the nine floors, keep this cultural tip in mind: In France, the bottom floor isn\u2019t called the first floor \u2014 it\u2019s known as the \u201crez-de-chauss\u00e9e\u201d or ground floor. Lafayette Coupole actually begins with a basement level or Floor -1, followed by Floor 0 and Floor 1. You\u2019ll also find that Floor 7 is missing entirely. From Floor 6, there\u2019s a staircase that takes you directly to the rooftop terrace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Floors -1 and 0: Wellness and fitness  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Floor -1 is known as the \u201cwellness galerie,\u201d where you can treat yourself to facials, massages, yoga and pilates, and high intensity workouts. With brands like Skinneo and Gloss\u2019up, plus fitness and beauty stores for shopping, what else do you need to feel pampered? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
